Children’s Mercy Kansas City’s Performance Improvement department hosted its second annual “Lean Summit” on April 12, 2024. The event highlighted efforts across the organization to improve quality, eliminate waste in processes, reduce waiting, and improve the overall experience for patients and families.

The event was open to the public and all proceeds went to the Children's Mercy Illuminate campaign, lighting the path forward for the youth mental health crisis. 

 

Presentations

The event will feature five inspiring presentations covering a variety of lean improvements 

  • Community Generosity in Action: Streamlining Donations for a Magical Impact at Children's Mercy
    Toys, clothing, toiletries, and other items are generously donated by the community to Children's Mercy. Learn how a cross-functional team created efficient processes to receive, process, and distribute these donated items throughout the enterprise - and deliver a magical experience to even more patients and families.

  • Sparkling Success: Standardizing the STAT clean process to improve patient throughput 
    Learn how our Environmental Services and Nursing teams collaborated in a workshop to clearly define STAT cleans & improve response times. The team utilized standard work and processes for how to remove common barriers and cover staffing gaps during high volume of room turnovers. The team will share their awesome job of utilizing the Daily Management System to sustain and continually improve this process!

  • Transparent Triumph: Waiting Innovation with Family-Facing Screens at Children's Mercy Kansas
    Learn how Patient Access, Lab and Radiology reduced wait times, increased transparency, and improved patient satisfaction by working together to design and trial multiple process improvements at Children's Mercy Kansas. 

  • From Wait to Wow: Improving GI Procedure Scheduling for our Patients and Families
    In August 2023, only 30% of our patients reported that they had gotten a gastrointestinal (GI) procedure appointment as soon as they wanted. Learn how a large GI Division/Perioperative Services/Informatics team rapidly implemented process improvements to greatly increase patient satisfaction and reduce lead time from clinic visit to procedure. 

  • Fast Lane to Care: Drive-Through Insights Fueling Efficient Nurse-Led Visits
    Learn how operations that were established during Covid drive-through clinics were creatively re-imagined to improve patient flow, decrease length of stay, and reduce strain on limited staff resources in the Urgent Care setting.
