Chronic Rhinitis and Sinusitis
Allergic and irritant rhinitis are common comorbidities of asthma in pediatric and adult patients.
Chronic rhinosinusitis is an independent risk factor for uncontrolled asthma and asthma exacerbations.
Patients with nasal polyposis should be evaluated for AERD – a disease with asthma, nasal polyposis, and aspirin sensitivity.
Allergen control and management of rhinitis and sinusitis are important for asthma control. This was emphasized in the latest EPR4 guidelines.
Allergy testing can be done with serum-specific IgE testing (blood work) and percutaneous skin testing.
For aeroallergen testing, patients can be referred to the Allergy Clinic.
