High School Student Volunteer
High school student volunteers support the Children’s Mercy staff, as well as help make the experience a positive one for patients, families and visitors.
Each opportunity uniquely supports our mission to transform the lives of kids cared for at Children’s Mercy.
Explore volunteer opportunities
Year-round: Currently, we do not have year-round opportunities available for high school students.
Summer volunteer program: The summer program offers a unique, short-term, opportunity to make a difference while supporting patients and families.
Summer 2025 program applications will be accepted March 1-31. The summer program runs June 2 - Aug. 8, 2025, requiring a commitment of one consistent 3-hour shift per week, on the same day each week, for 10 consecutive weeks.
There are 10 volunteer positions available. Selection criteria include previous service and standing, application, interview score, availability and application timeliness.
Volunteer requirements
All high school student volunteers must meet the following requirements:
Age: High School student volunteers, age 16+ by June 1, 2025, and still in high school.
Health and background clearance: The health and safety of our patients and their families is important. Volunteers will be required to complete a health form and receive required vaccinations. Volunteers must complete a background check upon turning 18.
Performance standards: Volunteers must follow hospital policies, maintain patient confidentiality and deliver exceptional service to patients and families.

Help make every visitor feel welcome and ensure they feel comfortable from the moment they walk in the door and throughout their time at the hospital.

Outpatient roles
Engage patients and their families in fun activities to help pass time in the waiting room areas throughout the hospital.
