Knowledge of Infectious Diseases in Schools

Children’s Mercy has partnered with North Kansas City Schools (NKC Schools) to learn more about respiratory viral infections (RVI) in school communities. School KIDS will perform RVI surveillance in NKC Schools to better understand how RVI affect children in schools.

The program also provides free on-demand respiratory viral testing for NKC School students and staff. Compensation is provided for samples collected.

The School KIDS program is amazing! It benefits both researchers and the participants. The paperwork is simple to complete and the emails I receive are short and concise regarding the information. The questionnaires are also quick to fill out. It does not interrupt class and the staff is friendly! I highly recommend the School KIDS program to continue to collect data on illnesses in a way that benefits both parties involved!

About School KIDS

The purpose of School KIDS is to understand how respiratory viruses spread in schools. Participating students and staff who have enrolled in School KIDS will be tested monthly at school for respiratory viruses when they are feeling well (asymptomatic or surveillance testing). Testing will be performed by the participant using a shallow nose swab inserted only into the tip of the nose.

Only the School KIDS team will know the results of asymptomatic tests. Students and staff can also be tested with they have respiratory symptoms (symptomatic or on-demand testing). Viral testing results will be available to participants/guardians for symptomatic tests.

The School KIDS program is led by Jennifer Goldman, MD, Jennifer Schuster, MD and Rangaraj Selvarangan, PhD of Children’s Mercy Kansas City.
