Medical Student Clerkship

Children's Mercy Hospital is the host site for the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine Pediatric Clerkship. Clerkship students also rotate through the NICU at University Health. Course instructors are Clerkship Director Maria Dycoco, MD, and Associate Directors, Bobby Riss, MD and Emily Goodwin, MD.

Clerkship Program Highlights

Competencies of our program align with the six competencies of the school of medicine.
Teaching methods include: orientation, patient presentations on rounds, progress notes, role modeling, observation, student presentations, CLIPP cases, conferences, chief resident report, teaching sessions, formal observation of H&Ps and workshops.
Assessment methods include: written assessment, daily feedback forms, formative assessment by residents and faculty after direct observation, NBME exam, CLEX journal and review of medical student written patient documentation.

Pediatric Core Rotation

The Pediatric Core Rotation is divided into the following three blocks:

Inpatient Pediatrics at Children's Mercy Hospital

The Inpatient block consists of two parts: a three-week daytime inpatient team experience and one- week evening/overnight Owl team experience.
Duration: 4 weeks

Newborn Nursery at University Health

The Nursery block is organized by Nursery Director Beth Simpson, MD.
Duration: 2 weeks

Program Schedule

7 a.m. arrival, examine and gather patient history
Team rounds with the attending and residents
Teaching sessions with the attending residents
Afternoons spent working up new admissions, planning discharges, attending deliveries and observing circumcisions
Finish work at roughly 4 p.m.
During the Nursery block, students take two twelve-hour shifts in the NICU from 8 a.m. - 8 p.m.
Students will have an average of one NICU shift per week. students are expected to attend deliveries during their shift.

Outpatient General Pediatrics at the Pediatric Care Center (PCC) at CMH (2 weeks)

The Outpatient block of the clerkship takes place in the Children's Mercy Hospital Pediatric Care Clinic (PCC) at 31^st and Broadway. It is organized by Clerkship Associate Director Maria Dycoco, MD.

Types of Teaching Clinics

Teaching FPC – Students can work directly with an attending in their faculty practice clinic.
PCC Ill Child Clinics – Students can interact directly with pediatric patients.
