Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
Description and Educational Objectives: This rotation is in the Division of Development and Behavioral Sciences. We treat a variety of patients, including individuals with autism, ADHD, anxiety, eating disorders and Tourette’s Disorder, as well as children who present with complicated medical conditions. Students may also see inpatients on the pediatric units of Children's Mercy Kansas City as part of a consultation/liaison experience. Objectives for this rotations are:
- To learn about the manifestations of common psychiatric disorders in children.
- To learn about standard treatments including medications and therapy.
- Become comfortable using different techniques to build rapport with youth.
- Become familiar with the different roles of various mental health care providers.

Elective duration: 4 weeks duration
Format: Shadowing MD and seeing consults on the inpatient unit.
Maximum Enrollment: 1 student at a time
Prerequisites: Completion of Core Pediatric Clerkship; must be in 3rd or 4th year of medical school or 5th or 6th year in a 6 year program.
Typical Schedule: Clinics are Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Conferences/didactics sessions are scheduled throughout the rotation.
Calls: No
Criteria for passing: Appropriate participation in discussion of cases and issues; appropriate behavior with children; and ability to conduct a basic interview with children.
Criteria for honors: Show a high degree of working knowledge of psychopharmacology and behavioral strategies. Ability to conduct an interview of a child with relevant information for complete psychiatric evaluation.
