Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Rotation
Description: This rotation will consist of direct observation of laboratory activities and shadowing lab directors. Students will review historical clinical consultations of the laboratory and participate in current consultations. Didactic sessions will include hospital and department conferences such as Grand Rounds, Journal Club and Clinical-Pathological conferences. The student will be able to attend selected hospital committee meetings. Guided reading will provide the student with the skills to evaluate the role of lab testing in diagnosis and prognosis. They will complete a project for presentation.
Educational objectives:

Understand the role of the clinical and anatomical pathologist as a consultant in the care of a patient.

Understand the workflow within the clinical and anatomical laboratory.

Understand the source of errors in orders, results, and interpretations of laboratory tests.

Understand the concept of normal and abnormal and sources of variability and how they affect lab tests.

Participate in an autopsy and understand the value it brings to health care providers and family.

Appreciate the development of new and emerging technologies in pathology and laboratory medicine.

Complete a case study or similar project for presentation.
