Pediatric Dermatology

Educational objectives: 

• Become proficient at describing skin lesions

• Basic understanding of acne and treatment regimens

• Recognition of atopic dermatitis and being able to develop general, appropriate treatment plan

• Recognition of common skin infections in children: warts, molluscum, staph and strep infections, tinea capitis, tinea versicolor and herpes simplex virus

• Differentiation between infantile hemangiomas and vascular malformations

• Acquiring basic understanding of photoprotective measures

• Familiarity with moles and worrisome changes

Elective duration: One month

Format: Participate in multiple weekly clinics (average seven) and inpatient consultations as well as didactic sessions. Most of clinical activity is in an observational capacity.

Prerequisites: Completion of Core Pediatric Clerkship. Must have a strong interest in dermatology.

Description: One month clinical elective with emphasis on outpatient pediatric dermatology. A wide mix of dermatologic conditions will be seen including: atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, vitiligo, skin infections (viral, bacterial, fungal); disorders for hair and nails; and vascular and pigmented birthmarks.

More unusual skin disorders including genodermatoses will be seen as well. Inpatient consultations and follow-up examinations are another important aspect of this rotation. Didactic sessions include scheduled dermatopathology conferences and dermatology/radiology conferences as well as several scheduled lectures by faculty during month. The student will see most patients with rotating pediatric and dermatology residents, all of which are staffed by the dermatology attendings.

Criteria for passing: Regular attendance and participation in outpatient clinics/impatient consultations (typical hours 8 a.m. to 5-6 p.m.).

Criteria for honors:

• Excellent interpersonal skills with patients/families/dermatology staff

• Evidence of extra reading

• Pulling of pertinent articles for patient care

• Participation in didactic interactive sessions with demonstration of superior fund of knowledge in dermatology

• Writing up case report

• Oral presentations pertaining to patients and skin conditions observed during rotation
