Pediatric Ophthalmology
Description: The pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus rotation combines both clinic and operating room exposure over four weeks. The clerkship provides training including describing exam findings and developing a logical approach for differential diagnosis and managing patients with problems ranging from refractive error to potentially blinding ophthalmic conditions. The students are required to attend pediatric ophthalmology lectures, given to the residents, and held every other Friday morning at Children’s Mercy Broadway. A schedule will be given at the start of the rotation.
Students will observe staff in both the clinic and operating room with the goal to ultimately be able to form a differential diagnosis and treatment plan for common ophthalmic conditions presenting in the pediatric population. Students will be encouraged to read about various ophthalmic conditions when not at clinic or in the operating room.
Relevant articles and reading lists will be provided. Evaluation of students at their respective levels will be based upon their fund of knowledge, clinical skills, effectiveness of communication.
At the end of the rotation the student is expected to demonstrate understanding in:

Describe the anatomy of the eye

Describe common ophthalmic conditions in the pediatric population

Describe basic treatments for strabismus

Describe common workup and treatment plan for various ophthalmic conditions in the pediatric population

Schedule: Clinic hours are 8-5, every other Friday morning lecture 7:30 before clinic, OR hours range with start times 7:30 - 8:00 until 4-5
Criteria for passing: Satisfactory performance on the clinical evaluation.
Criteria for honors: Outstanding performance on the clinical evaluation.
