Pediatric Advanced Cardiac Imaging Fellowship
The fourth year fellowship in Non-Invasive Imaging provides advanced training in all facets of cardiovascular imaging including transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography, 3D echocardiography, fetal echocardiography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The advanced imaging curriculum can be tailored to an applicant’s needs and may include more or less emphasis on any of these modalities. We have a well-resourced echolab with 11 [and growing number of] imaging faculty, more than 25 sonographers, state of the art echo machines, unmatched IT support, Echo core-lab and anesthesia support for sedation as required. Our 3D echo imaging program is one of the best and fellows will get excellent hands-on training for peri-procedural and peri-operative echocardiograms.
A One year program
- Customizable curriculum to accommodate fellows’ individual interests and background.
- Fellow participation in research/quality improvement projects
- Time: 80% clinical, 20% research/QI
- Clinical time is divided among modalities with flexibility depending on individual interest.
- Imaging fellows will participate in didactic and clinical conferences.
- Participation in international collaboration
The objectives of the fellowship are to provide training spanning from fetal to expertise in multimodality imaging. In addition, the fellowship offers experience in 3D Echocardiography, Myocardial mechanics, Trans-esophageal echo for peri-operative and peri-procedural guidance. The fellowship curriculum will be customized to accommodate the individual interests and background of the fellowship applicant.
Sample starting schedule in July could look like:
- Monday – TEE + ICU echoes + conference imaging preparation

Your clinical experience
Congenital heart disease
Our high-volume Heart Center hosts over 500 surgeries, 20,000+ transthoracic echocardiograms, 800 fetal echocardiograms and over 500 MRI/CT scans per year.
MRI/CT
Our 1.5T and 3T magnets are dedicated to provide comprehensive care for our congenital and acquired heart patients including Stress MRI, functional CT, 3D printing and modeling program. There is excellent partnership and collaboration between the heart center and Radiology department along with excellent IT/software support.
Fetal Echoes
As a free-standing Children's hospital, Children's Mercy Hospital is proud to be home to Elizabeth J. Ferrell fetal health center that provides inter-disciplinary care for fetuses with CHD.
Didactic series
Clinical exposure and mentorship are supplemented by a multitude of didactic educational offerings including a dedicated cardiac MRI core lecture series based on interest. Fellows attend monthly Core Curriculum conferences focus on topics such as clinical teaching tools, mentorship, and ethics. A Pediatric Cardiology Core Curriculum conference will highlight the core knowledge base in our field. Fellows will also participate in Heart Center clinical conferences such as:
- Weekly Echo conference
- Cardiovascular surgery conferences
- Monthly Heart Center M&M Conferences
- Journal Club
- Annual Fellow Retreat
Research opportunities
Each of our trainees is expected to complete a minimum of one scholarly project during the course of their fellowship, resulting in the submission of a manuscript to a peer-reviewed publication. The Children’s Mercy Research Institute (CMRI) integrates research and clinical care with nationally recognized expertise in genomic medicine, precision therapeutics, population health and health care innovation. In 2021 the CMRI moved into a nine story, 375,000 square foot space emphasizing a translational approach to research in which clinicians and researchers work together to accelerate the pace of discovery that enhances care.
