Academic Curriculum

Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Fellowship

Pediatric Hematology/Oncology (PHO) fellowship conferences are a priority and fellows are expected to attend 75% of these required conferences.

PHO core curriculum

  • Weekly didactics presented by PHO fellows and/or faculty, and subspecialty content experts. The curriculum covers all required PHO content specified by the American Board of Pediatrics over a period of one year.
  • Monthly Fellows’ Case Conference where fellows present and receive feedback on the care of their continuity patients or other interesting consults.
  • Simulation Curriculum for communication skills: Fellows lead nine scenarios over the course of their fellowship, practicing the skills to deliver difficult news in various situations specific the field of Hem/Onc.
  • Monthly Fellowship Program meeting with program director, associate program directors, GME coordinator and GME liaison, providing a forum for fellow support, clear communication, and program improvement.
  • Quarterly Program Evaluation Committee meetings, with strong fellow involvement, focusing on annual program goals and continuous program improvement
  • Monthly PREP Board Review Questions presented by faculty, geared toward the most recent in-training exam results.
  • Monthly multidisciplinary tumor boards include leukemia/lymphoma conference, solid tumor conference, sarcoma tumor board, BMT/stem cell conference, molecular tumor board and brain tumor conference. Quarterly Histiocytosis conference.
  • Bi-monthly Hematology Case Conference with interesting case presentations, brief learning points, and short presentations by fellows and faculty
  • Monthly Research Workshop and Monthly Clinical Research Meeting where research ideas are presented, feedback is provided, and results are reviewed.
  • Monthly Visiting Professor Program where national experts are invited to spend the day with our division, providing a one-hour lecture, a one-hour challenging cases conference, and a lunch session dedicated to PHO fellows with mentoring and networking.
  • Pediatric Hem/Onc/BMT Morbidity & Mortality Conference quarterly
  • Journal club presented monthly by PHO faculty or fellows, utilizing a structured format to educate fellows on proper literature review
  • Quarterly Professionalism and Wellbeing Conference for PHO fellows only, led by two faculty members, utilizing a national curriculum

GME common fellowship curriculum

  • Hospital-wide program to address topics common to all ACGME-approved fellowship programs
    • Conferences cover topics such as professionalism, medical ethics, fatigue/sleep deprivation, physician impairment, teaching, mentoring and leadership
  • In-depth education for second and third-year fellows
    • Topics include case discussions on medical ethics and professionalism, health economics, transition to faculty, coding and billing
  • Professor Rounds
    • Case-based presentations for residents and faculty prepared and presented by a senior resident each week.
  • Grand Rounds
    • Weekly series with presentations from local, regional and nationally recognized faculty on timely topics.
