Research Opportunities
Pediatric Pulmonology Fellowship
Our program is designed to encourage trainees to develop an interest in clinical, translational, educational and/or basic research. The goal is to provide fellows with the fundamental skills required to perform original research in fields related to pediatric pulmonology.
The process of selecting a research topic begins early in the first year, and the intent is to match a fellow’s interests with research mentors identified by the fellow with the help of program directors. The fellow performs research that they have chosen during the second and third years of training.
With the guidance of their research mentors and program directors, fellows are expected to generate a research question, develop the appropriate study design, collect and interpret data, and present the data in the form of an original publication. In order to ensure a successful research experience, each fellow is assigned a Scholarly Oversight Committee (SOC) which meets with the fellow bi-annually to assess the fellow’s progress and provide feedback. The program directors also meets with fellows and mentors individually on a biannual basis to monitor and facilitate their progress.
Fellows submit abstracts for presentation at national meetings and articles for publication in peer-reviewed journals. By the end of training, each fellow completes a significant research project, a requirement by the American Board of Pediatrics to sit for the subspecialty board exam.
Past/current fellows have completed scholarly work in the areas of clinical research, translational research, education and quality improvement. The pulmonary and sleep medicine faculty have a wide variety of research and quality improvement interests and have associations with ATS, Childhood Interstitial Lung Disease, the BPD collaborative group and the PPHN Network along with other national collaborative groups, allowing for flexibility when choosing a project.
In addition, the Children's Mercy Research Institute supports a large number of basic-science, translational and clinical research projects. We have an exciting opportunity with the newly endowed Children's Mercy Research Institute.
